When we arrive at the club, we don’t even have to give our names. The moment the bouncer sees Florence—who is often featured in tabloids as a ‘society princess gone wild’—we’re waved through.
“So, is this opening a pretty big deal?” I ask, as we hand over our coats. There were scores of people milling about outside, pressed against the wall, curving around the corner of the building. They were only letting the prettiest girls in, from what I could tell.
“Babe, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t a big deal. I bring press. I don’t just give that away lightly.” Just as she finishes speaking a male voice calls her name. When I look that way, I see a photographer with his camera at the ready. “Smile, Sage. Show my brother what he’s not paying attention to.” She holds me close and we smile as several flashes go off, creating white spots in my eyes.
“Who’s your friend?” the photographer asks. And as Florence gives him my name, I take a moment to look around the club.
Most prominent, is the flashing blue and purple lights reflecting off every surface, followed by the scent of bodies, dry ice machines, fresh paint and spilled alcohol.
Pulling me further into the throng, Florence keeps a hold of my hand as she scans the crowded room for anyone she knows. But I think finding anyone in here would be an impossible feat. The place is packed. The music is loud. It’s all just a mash up of color and shadow.
A woman dressed in a uniform depicting the club’s name, ‘Mirror’, appears in front of us and says something to Florence.
“The VIP area is upstairs,” she relays to me.
Nodding, I follow as the woman leads us up a spiral staircase. There are so many people stopping us to say hi to Florence, and I have to keep close to the railing to give enough space to everyone moving around. I feel like a sardine in a tin can.
Once seated, Florence orders us both manhattans then turns to me. “What do you think of the place so far?”
“Well, I can see why it’s called Mirror,” I respond. There are different shaped mirror balls hanging over the dance floor reflecting the lights, and on the wall behind the DJ is an enormous floor-to-ceiling mirror that makes this place seem huge. On this floor, the walls behind the booths are also adorned with mirrors. Everywhere you look you can see yourself. It’s outrageous.
“But, do you like it?”
“Sure. I like it fine.”
She smiles as if she doesn’t believe me. Then she pushes my drink toward me after the server places them on the glass table. We’re seated so we overlook the dance floor below. “I’ll ask you again after a few of these.”
Lifting the glasses, we tap them together before taking a sip. The alcohol burns the back of my throat and feels warm as it travels to my belly. I move to place the glass back down, but Florence takes a hold of the stem and lifts it up so I have no choice but to drink it or have it spill all over me.
